Hot tips for planning your honeymoon

1. Timing
It's never too early to start planning your honeymoon. Although most couples think they should wait until only a few months before the wedding, the early birds are finding great deals; not to mention their pick of the best rooms, flights and schedules.

  • At a minimum, decide on your destination 6 months before your wedding... a year is even better!
  • Five months before, secure your reservations and pay your deposits.
  • Three months before, finalize details (i.e. tours, activities, etc.)

Most people get married during the summer months, when a lot of the world is also on vacation. Plan early and you will reap the rewards!

2. The Experience
Create a short list of 'must have' and 'would be nice to have' on your honeymoon. For example, is a bungalow with beach access or a room with a view more fitting? Activities and amenities are also usually very important to couples. By identifying those that are essential, it is easier to help determine an appropriate accommodation style and an ideal honeymoon destination.

3. Passports
If you don't yet have one yet, get a rush on your passport - obtaining a new passport is taking months because of new international policy. So, you are advised to utilize the rush service, despite the fact that your honeymoon may be months away.

4. Vacation/Holiday Time
Determine exactly how many days you can be away and make sure your desired vacation time is locked in. Knowing the number of days you have to travel, taking into consideration required travel/flight time and whether you'll be crossing the International Dateline, can help determine whether some destination options are feasible.

5. Budget
Set your budget. Consider whether you'll have the funds to splurge on your room category or if you'd rather take that scuba diving excursion you've been thinking about. Also, think about meal options. A meal plan or all-inclusive option may not be worth it to you if you're not big eaters or like to explore local restaurants; however some resorts require a meal plan, especially if in a remote location. If you don't want to worry about spending additional dollars while on your honeymoon, go for the meal plan and indulge!

6. Choose a Professional
Enlist the help of a professional. You wouldn't try baking your wedding cake yourself, would you? Choose a travel planner or agent with experience in planning honeymoons and who has personal knowledge of your destination. Talk with them over the phone, not just via email, to help establish a relationship. Interview them as you would any other vendor you're considering working with.

A good planner can save you money as well as time - two enormous factors for a couple trying to plan a wedding and a honeymoon simultaneously.
